The Liberty head gold coin began production in 1838 with the $10 gold eagle. The first year of mintage for the other denominations are as follows: $2.50 quarter eagle (1840), $5 half eagle (1839), and the $20 double eagle (1849).The obverse, or front of the coin displays a side profile image of lady liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word liberty. Indian head gold coins feature a Native American wearing a headdress on the front (obverse) of the coin and a perched bald eagle on the reverse side.
